Amber is officially not a crystal, but the resin of extinct coniferous trees, over 50 million years old, which has hardened and fossilized. Amber has been known to people since prehistoric times.
The largest deposits of amber are on the coast of the North and Baltic Seas. As many as ninety percent of the amber deposits today are located along the eastern coast of the Baltic and are extracted from the sea. Since amber is an ancient resin, leaves, flowers and other things from nature are often found in it.
